My name is Mikayla Carroll and I am a primary school teacher but I am not a third culture kid. I taught in New Zealand before moving half-way around the world for work. I ended up in Abu Dhabi teaching at a number of different International Schools. Many of the children I taught were third culture kids, but I did not know that at the time. These children were not born in the country but have grown up in this foreign land without most of their family around. The majority of these children did not belong to the religion followed within the country, as they were from Western countries. This started me thinking about how growing up in a completely different cultural lifestyle, religion or community and even speaking a different language can affect the lives of these children.
A bit about my family, my first child was born in Abu Dhabi and spent the first 18 months of his life there before we decided to move back to New Zealand for the birth of our second child. While at home in New Zealand I began to study towards my Master’s of Education, which is where I first learnt about the concept of Third Culture Kids. We have just moved back overseas again, i quickly realised this means my own children will grow up as third culture kids. This is why the topic of third culture kids is of special interest to me and why I choose to complete my Master’s Dissertation on this topic. My research is intended to fill in some of the gaps in the current research. It aims to develop a contemporary insight into the lives of modern- day TCKs. As a teacher I would like to better understand how we can strive towards developing well-rounded global citizens.
